TOMATO SEVAI/TOMATO IDIYAPPAM/SEVAI RECIPES

DSC02554Idiyappam or Sevai is always a good option to make for breakfast.I already have a few idiyappam recipes in my blog,both instant and homemade and they are always filling and also a wholesome meal in itself.When you have idiyappam ready you can flavour it with any thing you like and the options are endless and purely upto your imagination.Usually a breakfast recipe,this can be had a dinner item too as I make it sometimes or a snack.The method of preparation is very easy and quick and can be made in no time.For kids who are fussy eaters,you can always a lot of veggies and mix it with sevai and they will never know what veggies you had added.So today it is Tomato Sevai or Tomato  Idiyappam in Nithya’s Kitchen.Scroll down for the tasty recipe of the same..

INGREDIENTS

TO TEMPER
Mustard 1/2 tsp
Urad Dal 1/2 tsp
Channa Dal 1/2 tsp
Green Chilli 2
Asafoetida 1/4 tsp
Oil 3 tsp
OTHER INGREDIENTS
Idiyappam 2 cups
Tomato 3 small
Onion 1
Green Peas a handful
Red Chilli Powder 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp
Curry Leaves a sprig
Coriander Leaves a few
Salt to taste

HOW TO MAKE
  • In a pan add all the ingredients given in the to temper table.Once mustard has crackled and dals have turned brown,add chopped onion.

  • Add now green peas,curry leaves,red chilly powder and turmeric powder.Wait it it cooks and onion turns pink.

  • Add chopped tomatoes and salt.Once the tomatoes are cooked and turn mushy,switch off the flame.

  • Add cooked idiyappam and mix well.Garnish with green coriander leaves.

  • Delicious Tomato Sevai/Tomato Idiyappam  is ready to be served.Enjoy as it is or with any chutney or raita.

Notes
  • You can make fresh idiyappam at home or use any store brand idiyappam and follow the instructions on the pack to cook.
  • Add carrots and beans too for more taste.
  • You can make a no onion version of this by avoiding onions too.

INSTANT PULI SEVAI/INSTANT PULI IDIYAPPAM/BACHELORS RECIPES

HOW TO MAKE
  • In a pan of hot water add instant sevai and cook for 5 minutes.Drain in a colander and pass running cold water through it.This ensures the sevai not sticking with each other.

  • In a pan add sesame oil and heat.Add Eastern Puliyodhare Mix and fry a bit.

LEMON SEVAI/LEMON IDIYAPPAM/SEVAI RECIPES

DSC09468Lemon sevai  is a tangy tasty tiffin or breakfast recipe I usually make at home.Specially helpful in days whenever onion is forbidden,this is a wholesome dinner option as well.I made this with with rice flour,but you can make it the traditional way of soaking the rice and grinding it nicely and steaming it and then putting it in the nazhi or press and squeeze out.That process is long,time consuming but very tasty.The method I used is equally flavourful and forms a good meal.See down below the recipe of Lemon Sevai..

Idiyappam/Sevai 1 cup
Mustard 1/2 tsp
Channa Dal 1/2 tsp
Urad Dal 1/2 tsp
Sesame Oil 1tsp
Green chilly 1
Turmeric Powder 1/4 tsp

Lemon Juice 2 tsp
Peanuts a few
Cashewnuts a few

HOW TO MAKE
  • Take a pan and add sesame oil.Add mustard and when they crackle add channa dal,urad dal,curry leaves.peanuts and cashewnuts.Fry a bit.Add asafoetida and turmeric powder.

  • Take the above fried ingredients in a vessel.Add steamed sevai.Add now lemon juice and salt.

  • Mix well.Lemon Sevai /Lemon Idiyappam is ready.

  • You can add broken red chillies for extra spicy taste.
  • When tempered in sesme oil this sevai tastes great.
  • Coconut chutney is best with this sevai.

IDIYAPPAM/SEVAI/SEVAI RECIPES

DSC09428Idiyappam or string hopper is one recipe which I make twice a month.I make it sometimes for tiffin for evening or for breakfast or dinner too.In olden days sevai was made using the traditional sevai nazhi.I have it too at home,but made these with homemade rice flour.the one which uses sevai nazhi method is very tough and I remember me and my bro Prakash helping mom to squeeze the sevai out.Good old days!I make several varieties with sevai and want to post it one by one,so that you can see elaborated pictures to understand clearly.Iam not a sweet person but to start with an idiyappam recipe this sounded fare.this one is served with coconut milk.It is highly popular in Kerala and Sri Lanka too.So here goes an easy version of the very traditional idiyappam my way.Do try out and let me know..

Home made Rice Flour 1 cup
Water 1 1/4 cup
Salt 1/4 tsp
Oil 1/2 tsp
Sugar as per taste
Grated Coconut 1/2 cup
Cardamom Powder 1/4 tsp

HOW TO MAKE

  • Boil water  and add salt and oil.Take rice flour in a vessel.Add water slowly.Mix well without forming lumps.Water should be warm.Roll into equal propotions.

  • Take omapodi press/achhu and place the rice dough inside.Grease an idli mould and squeeze out the rice flour mixture on the idli moulds.Steam for 5-7 minutes.Take out.

  • Serve with coconut milk.For extracting coconut milk,grind grated coconut and add a little water and sieve.Heat slightly and add sugar and cardamon powder.Mix with freshly made idiayappam and enjpy.

  • You can add plain milk too.
  • Adding nuts will have an added taste.
