MASALA PURI/CHAAT RECIPES

DSC04621 On a rainy day when you are really hungry,this Masala Puri will be like a bowl of happiness to you.I really mean it as it comforting,filling and yummy for your tummy.As I said in my previous post I have been making a few chaat recipes since last week and could click pictures at leisure.So today it is Masala Puri for you at Nithya’s Kitchen.This chaat unlike other chaat varieties is served hot with the gravy specially for it.I have had this many times and here in Bangalore it is very famous and is sold in many chaat shops.My daughter is much fond of this chaat so I made it for her and her visiting friends last week.Just a little preparation is needed before we start and once you have assembled the ingredients,chaat making is a breeze.So let’s make Masala Puri today.

White Peas(Dried) 1 cup
Green Chilli 3
Coriander Leaves 1/4 bunch+few for garnishing
Red Chilly  Powder 1/2 tsp
Cumin Powder 1/2 tsp
Chaat Masala Powder 1/2 tsp
Amchur Powder 1/2 tsp
Green Chutney 2 tsp
Sweet Chutney 2 tsp
Onion 1
Tomato 1
Salt to taste
Sev 1/4 cup

HOW TO MAKE
  • Soak white peas overnight.Next morning pressure cook white peas in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles.Drain and allow it to cool.

  • Take half the quantity of cooked white peas,coriander and green chilli.Reserve some coriander for garnishing.Grind coarsely.

  • Take a pan and this puree to it.Add water if you find the ground mixture too thick.Add cumin powder,amchur powder,red chilli powder and chaat masala powder.Add salt and cook for 5 minutes.

  • Once the gravy reaches the correct consistency add rest of the peas and mix well.Now the gravy is ready to use in chaats.You can also use this as a side dish for rotis and puris.DSC04528DSC04867
  • Take a plate and break into pieces.Pour gravy over.Remember to reheat the gravy as the chaat tastes graet while hot.

  • Add sweet chutney and green chutney followed by chopped onion and tomato.

  • Add sev and chopped coriander leaves.

Notes
  • The gravy should be hot when it is mixed with the rest of the ingredients.
  • Add some more red chilli powder and chaat masala powder on top if you want the chaat to be extra tasty.
  • You can also use papdis in place of puris.
